What is Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery?

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a complex specialty that bridges the gap between dentistry, medicine and surgery. The speciality deals with the surgical management of conditions of the teeth, mouth, face and jaws – including wisdom tooth and minor oral surgery, facial deformity, facial trauma, implant surgery, oral pathology, jaw reconstructive (orthognathic) surgery, and TMJ surgery.

Why see an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon?

You can be confident you are receiving treatment from a highly trained, committed and expert individual in the field supported by a team focused on delivering the highest quality of care in this area. This means your treatment will be carried out efficiently, reducing your time under local or general anaesthesia, minimising surgical trauma to the nearby structures and reducing your downtime.

If you have other complex medical problems, and whether you require simple dental extractions or major surgery, your surgeon can utilise their medical expertise in liaising with your general practitioner and/or other medical specialists to coordinate your care. This will ensure your procedure is completed in a safe and predictable manner.

Your surgeon will have admitting rights to private hospitals and thus be able to provide the treatment in an accredited hospital facility under general anaesthesia if required.

You will be eligible for a Medicare rebate for a portion of your consultation fee and any relevant medical investigations (such as imaging and blood tests) ordered. You will also be able to receive a Medicare Rebate or Health Fund Rebate for any aspect of your treatment that is classified as “medical”. These include bone grafting surgery for implant placement, jaw reconstructive procedures, TMJ surgery, oral pathology and oral cancer related procedures, and facial trauma surgery.

Our OralMax Surgeons remain committed to providing a service to the public health sector and broader community and hold a number of public hospital appointments across major teaching hospitals and universities across Melbourne and Geelong.

They are all active participants in teaching through hospitals and universities and training the new generation of doctors, dentists and surgeons. They serve on several committees within and outside the speciality to maintain standards of care delivered to the public.

YOU MAY SEEK THE SERVICES OF AN ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON FOR A NUMBER OF CONDITIONS, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING:

  • Removal of wisdom teeth
