Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How does the consultation fee work?

If you have a referral from a medical or dental practitioner and a Medicare Card, Medicare will cover part of the consultation.

Q. What do I need for my consultation?

If you have a referral letter and x-rays, please bring these to your appointment. You do not need a referral letter to be seen and may self-refer. A valid referral will allow you to claim part of your consultation from Medicare if you are eligible.

Q. Will I receive a rebate from Medicare or my Health Fund for my procedure?

Medicare will cover a portion of the consultation fee but not treatment that is classified as ‘dental’. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons perform procedures that are either medical or dental according to Medicare and Health Funds. Your rebate and what you can claim depends on the exact procedure(s) you require. Following you consultation you will receive all relevant item numbers for your procedures which will allow you to check what you can claim and how much you will receive back.

Q. When can I claim my surgery fees with my health fund?

If your procedure is performed in our rooms under local anaesthetic, we are able to claim on your behalf on the day.

If your procedure is under general anaesthetic, the anaesthetist and the hospital will have their own separate fees. If you have private health insurance you will need to check with your health fund how much they will cover. You may have to pay your fund an excess for hospital admissions depending on your type of cover.

Q. What methods of payment do you accept?

We accept Eftpos, Visa, MasterCard, Amex (incurs a 2% surcharge), direct deposit (EFT) and cash.

Q. Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. We offer an interest free payment plan through MySmilePlan. You are required to pay a 20% deposit up front with the balance paid over 15 months in fortnightly credit card payments. There is a setup fee of $39 and fortnightly credit card processing fees of $3. Please ask one of our friendly staff for additional information or to setup your payment plan.

Q. How long will I need to take off work?

The length of recovery depends on your surgery. Minor surgery can be 1-2 days, wisdom teeth surgery 5-7 days, major surgery 14 days or longer depending to the exact nature of your procedure and any other medical conditions you may have. You will receive a medical certificate to cover you for sick leave during your recover period.

Q. How long will I be in hospital for? Does someone need to be with me?

The majority of procedures performed may be performed as a day procedure. This means you will be discharged home the same say and someone will need to pick you up as you will not be able to drive for the first 24 hours and should not be alone. If you are having major surgery performed, you may need to stay in hospital for 1-2 nights. Our surgeons will go through this is detail at your consultation.
